Celebrating Advances at UMB

As we enter our third century, the University of Maryland, Baltimore continues to grow in national stature through the dedication, hard work, and talent of our faculty, staff, and students. Our annual Founders Week each October is a time to honor the accomplishments and advances that they have made, to celebrate with our alumni and friends, and to recognize our generous donors. Without private support, these forward strides would not be possible.

Founders Week 2008 opens on Monday, Oct. 20, with the Entrepreneur of the Year Breakfast, honoring J. Marc Simard, MD, PhD, for moving his research to alleviate the suffering of stroke victims closer to the marketplace. Our black-tie gala will be held at one of Baltimore’s newest venues, the Hilton Baltimore, next to Camden Yards, on Tuesday, Oct. 21. On this special night we celebrate with our many friends and supporters and recognize outstanding faculty contributions of the year with the Founders Week Awards—Teacher of the Year, Research Lecturer of the Year, Public Servant of the Year, and Entrepreneur of the Year.

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Research Lecturer of the Year from the School of Nursing, Jane Lipscomb, PhD, RN, FAAN, will deliver the Faculty Research Lecture on the topic of safety in the health care work environment.  My personal favorite—the Staff Luncheon—will take place on Thursday, Oct. 23, at historic Westminster Hall. And we finish up Founders Week appropriately enough by feeding the future leaders of Maryland—our students—at a cookout in the courtyard at the School of Nursing.
